Azarenka Returns to the Top
Belarusian tennis player Victoria Azarenka has reclaimed her position as the world’s top female tennis player after Serena Williams defeated Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the final of Wimbledon at the All England Club, according to the latest rankings released by the WTA.
The 23 year old Pole needed to win her final match against the 5 time Wimbledon champion on Saturday, the 7th of July to claim the world number one spot for the first time in her career but after falling short in her final hurdle, she had to be content with moving up from third to second in the latest edition of the WTA Tour rankings.
Azarenka reclaims her position as the top female tennis player in the world just a month after being displaced from her position by Russian tennis beauty Maria Sharapova, who reclaimed the number one spot after her win at the French Open in Roland Garros. But having failed to reach even the quarter final stages of Wimbledon, a title she took over by storm as a 16 year old, Sharapova was knocked out in the fourth round.
And that defeat meant that Sharapova would lose her world number one status to either of Victoria Azarenka or Agnieszka Radwanska. One of the tennis betting offers was on Azarenka making it to the very top, but the hopes of the Polish youngster were dashed as she came up against a resurgent Serena Williams who thrashed her on her way to claim the 5th Wimbledon crown and 14th Grand Slam singles title of her career.
Victoria Azarenka, who won the Australian Open earlier in the year, became the top female tennis player with that win but after being knocked off her perch by Sharapova, she has clawed her way back to the top again, with Maria Sharapova dropping down to third in the rankings, after her early exit from Wimbledon. According to the odds on US Open, Azarenka has a great chance of adding the US Open title to her trophy cabinet.
